John Ray Leary has been involved in the game of golf for the past 29 years was the director and founder of JRL Golf at Angeles National Golf Club for 12 years. He has recently taken his dedication and expertise the Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena, CA
As a junior golfer he was ranked as high as 5th in the world junior rankings and was also a First Team All American before playing for USC as a full scholarship player. Â As a professional he toured the world and played on mini tours all the way to the PGA Tour before a back injury sidelined him.
With a love of the game and a deep knowledge of golf, John decided to share that and got into coaching. He launched the JRL Golf Academy at Angeles National Golf Club in Sunland California where he is the Director of Instruction.
In this time he has worked and helped juniors, amateurs, as well as LPGA and PGA tour players. He opened up the JRL Golf Academy in 2016 as well as his own specialized junior golf academy. In the first year his team of coaches helped his academy players combine for 43 wins on various junior golf tours in California. His success comes from knowing what it personally takes to get to the highest levels of the game.  John’s  personal high level playing experience and his coaching relationships with professional players gives him a wealth of knowledge that he passes on to his students.
Twenty-two of John’s recent junior players have received college golf scholarships.  Some of those universities include USC, UC Santa Barbara, Yale, Cal Poly SLO and the University of San Diego.
John’s coaching philosophy is very simple. He has 3 elements that he helps his students develop and understand – efficient body movements that support the swing, how to practice to get the most out of yourself during competition, and understanding the cause & effect of ball flights.  The body works in specific ways for optimal use, competition during practice makes for more fun AND makes the player more competitive during tournaments, and knowing what makes the ball curve ultimately allows the player to be their own best coach!
John is a founding partner of The California Junior Golf Tour, which offers multi-day nationally ranked junior golf events at various Southern California Venues and year-round player development programs.
